The Kingdom Mission

By Nick Ashley

Luke 19:28-40

Nothing is going to stop Jesus.

He’s a man on a mission, who knows exactly what He’s going to do.

Heading towards Jerusalem, Jesus is well aware that trial and execution are what await him there. Yet He doesn’t shy away from that inevitable future. Instead, He brings it on, planning the most impactful entry into the city.

By riding in on a donkey, Jesus is fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, “Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” Did the two disciples remember this verse when they were sent to find the colt? How about the animal’s owners, or the crowds lining the streets? Either way, they are more than willing to do whatever Jesus needs, and recognise Him as a king.

Even if the conclusion of these events was to be beyond all expectations, God’s plan had been set in motion, and nothing was going to stop it. “If these were silent, the stones would shout out!” Jesus says, as if all creation was willing this to happen.

Isn’t it amazing how God chooses to involve us in His plans? The two disciples He sent to fetch the colt, the colt’s owners and the colt itself were all responding to His call. By following their example, and choosing to serve the Lord in everything we do (Col. 3:23-24), we become part of something much bigger than ourselves.

Heavenly Father, may your kingdom come, may your will be done! We know that nothing is going to stop your plans. Thank you for giving each one of us a role to play in your story. I choose to serve you today, Lord, and live out your gospel truth.

Amen
